Cal Ripken Raises Reward for Info on Mom's Abduction to $100K

After the abduction of his mom last year, Cal Ripken Jr. has boosted the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man who took her to $100,000, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Vi Ripken, 75, was kidnapped at gunpoint from her Aberdeen, Md., home a little more than a year ago. The unidentified middle-aged man drove the victim around central Maryland for hours before she was returned to her neighborhood. Vi Ripken said at the time that her abductor didn’t seem to know she was the baseball Hall of Famer’s mom.

Authorities were able to capture images of the man via surveillance cameras, but no arrests have been made.

“Hopefully, this effort will get some new information and new leads,” Cal Ripken said on Thursday, according to the Baltimore Business Journal. Ripken made his comments at a news conference, where he was joined by John Walsh of "America’s Most Wanted."

Vi Ripken told The Baltimore Sun last week that she’s been trying to get on with her life.

“I don’t want to go and hide,” she told the newspaper. “I felt like if I keep away from things, it’s not going to be very fun for me. I just had to face it.”

Anyone with information about the case can call the America’s Most Wanted hot line at 1-800-CRIME-TV, or the FBI at 410-265-8080.

Walsh said the case will be posted prominently on the "America’s Most Wanted" website. He also said anyone who provides a tip in the case can remain anonymous. “We’re going to catch this guy,” he said.

The kidnapper has been described as a tall, thin, white man who appears to be in his 30s or 40s. Aberdeen Police Chief Fred Budnick says there are no new leads on the case, but Cal Ripken is hoping that the increased reward – it originally was set at $2,000 – will change that.

“We would like to get closure on this case and give all of us some peace of mind,” Ripken said, according to WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Baltimore.
