An RNC voter database reportedly was left exposed on the Internet for two weeks, making private information available for nearly every voter in America. The leaked information, at the time, was not protected by a password and could have been accessed by anyone.
Deep Root Analytics, a GOP data firm, is believed to be responsible for the leak that exposed personal information about close to 200 million U.S. voters – information that included home addresses, birthdates, phone numbers and the ethnicity of each voter, according to the Gizmodo.
Deep Root was apparently contracted by the RNC and it confirmed last week that the leaked information belonged to the firm as well as to some outside sources.
UpGuard cyber risk analyst Chris Vickery made the discovery last week while conducting a routine Internet scan. He alerted the proper authorities shortly after.
According to The Washington Post, the leaked data also pinpointed voters’ political views and where they stand on key issues like health care.
“They’re using this information to create political dossiers on individuals that are now available for anyone,” said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. “These political data firms might as well be working for the Russians.”
The data also included the voting history for the some 198 million Americans as well as information that gave hints at how the Republican Party strategizes for elections.
“What is alarming about this now is that I believe it’s the first time RNC IDs and model data have been exposed,” said Matt Oszcowski, a veteran GOP political data strategist. “This is not just a list of people; this is unique proprietary information which gives away [Republican] strategy and informs on targeting and methodology.”
“With this data you can target neighborhoods, individuals, people of all sorts of persuasions,” Vickery said. “I could give you the home address of every person the RNC believes voted for Trump.”
Deep Root blamed the leak on a security settings change.
“We accept full responsibility, will continue with our investigation, and based on the information we have gathered thus far, we do not believe that our systems have been hacked,” Deep Root said.
