Rob Ford, Toronto's Mayor, Admits He 'Smoked a Lot' of Marijuana

Rob Ford, mayor of Canada's largest city Toronto, confessed on Wednesday that he has "smoked a lot" of marijuana, but wasn't forthcoming about when asked when and where.

Ford fought off controversy earlier this year when the Toronto Star — which reported Ford confessing he smoked a lot of marijuana —  also reported in May on a video appearing to show Ford smoking crack cocaine.  "I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine," Ford later told the Star.

The latest question on Ford's drug use came in a media inquiry after other prominent Canadian officials said over the last week that they used marijuana, according to the Star. A call by Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in July for new legalization has fired up the marijuana debate in Canada.

The Star reported that Trudeau acknowledged last week that he had a "puff" of marijuana at a dinner party while serving as an MP three years ago. On Wednesday, Premier Kathleen Wynne said, "I have smoked marijuana, but not for the last 35 years," according to the Star.

"It’s never been a big part of my life," Wynne, 60, said, according to the Star. She added, that smoking marijuana was done "very, very infrequently and certainly not since my children were born. And my eldest is 33, so I’m thinking 35 years."

Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and his New Democratic Party counterpart Andrea Horwath acknowledged past marijuana use in 2011, the Star said.

Ford told the Toronto Globe and Mail that he didn't know what has led to the flurry of marijuana true confessions among Canadian politicians.

"I don’t know why they are all coming out," said Ford. "You’ll have to ask them."

Ford was charged with driving under the influence in 1999 in Florida when authorities found a marijuana joint in his back pocket during a traffic stop, the Globe and Mail wrote. The newspaper said Ford eventually pleaded no contest to the charge.

Officials in the mayor’s office did not respond to Globe and Mail inquires about the last time Ford used marijuana.
