Roker Record Attempt: 34-Hour 'Weatherthon' Promotes USO

By    |   Thursday, 13 November 2014 09:38 AM EST

Al Roker's record attempt for longest uninterrupted live weather report began at 10:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday night, and is expected to continue through 8 a.m. Friday.

According to Today.com, the weather anchor's 34-hour attempt seeks to raise money armed forces and United States Service Organizations through his official Crowdrise page. It's also timed to coincide with Guinness World Records Day, "an international celebration of record breaking taking place across the globe November 13."

Norwegian weather broadcaster Eli Kari Gjengedal did a 33-hour broadcast in September, and Roker seeks to beat that time before Guinness can crown her the new record holder. Currently, the official record stands at 24-hours of continuous weather reporting.

As per Guinness' rules, Roker can take a five minute break for each hour of completed broadcasting, and he can bank those breaks to take longer ones — perhaps for a quick powernap. He is also confined to talking about weather seven days in the past or future, in addition, of course, to the present weather.

The show's producers are encouraging audiences and supporters to use the hashtag #Rokerthon on their favorite social media platforms to ask questions and comment during the feat.

The hashtag was trending on Twitter going into Thursday, with many fans posting encouraging and uplifting comments and pictures.
