After calling it “Project Cullinan” for months, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited confirmed Tuesday that its new SUV would have Cullinan as its official name.
The SUV is named after the Cullinan Diamond, a 3,106-carat diamond found in South Africa in 1905 that is still one of the largest flawless diamonds ever found, Forbes reported. CEO Torsten Muller-Ötvös says the name reflects the quality of the car, which is “perfect and brilliant.”
Rolls-Royce will unveil the secret SUV later this year after three years in development, Forbes reported. The Cullinan was tested in some of the Earth's most challenging environments: the Arctic Circle, the hot deserts of Africa and the Middle East and upon the Scottish Highlands and tall canyons of North America.
The Cullinan's exact specifications aren't yet known, nor is it clear whether the vehicle will be unveiled in a few weeks at the Geneva International Motor Show, at another auto show, or at a private event similar to the one at which automaker debuted its eighth-generation flagship Phantom VIII, CNet reported.
One speculation is that it will be like a Phantom VIII on stilts. Experts also think it will offer a large yet quiet turbocharged engine and an interior that will be more luxurious than in any other SUV on the market today, CNet reported. It is expected to compete most closely with the Bentley Bentayg.
Some on Twitter were skeptical about the Cullinan.
