Ronda Rousey Says She Could Beat Male Heavyweight Champ

Ronda Rousey Says She Could Beat Male Heavyweight Champ

Ronda Rousey, the current UFC women's bantamweight champion, believes she could beat heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez in a fight "under the right circumstances."

In an interview with the Spanish-language newspaper Hoy, Rousey said she could take Velasquez despite weighing nearly 100 pounds less than him.

"In any given moment, under the right circumstances, I think it is possible," she told Hoy, as translated by Yahoo. "You cannot tell me that it is physically impossible. It is possible that in any given moment that I could beat him. I simply believe in my possibilities."

The 26-year-old Olympic judo bronze medalist made a splash this year in the world of mixed martial arts after becoming the first female fighter to sign with the UFC in 2012. Since then, she's gone undefeated and even snagged two film roles in the upcoming "Fast & Furious 7" and "The Expendables 3."

Some Twitter users think her Velasquez comment was outrageous.

But others say it's just what fighters do to pump themselves up and drum up publicity for the sport.

"In order to have a chance at successfully facing the tension of a fight, fighters need to believe in themselves to a ridiculous degree," Yahoo's Elias Cepeda wrote. "In effect, all Rousey is saying is that, in a hypothetical situation where she had to fight Velasquez for some insane reason, she wouldn't just curl up and die — she'd fight on and believes that she'd find a way to win somehow."

Rousey will fight rival Miesha Tate in December. The two also face off this season as coaches on "The Ultimate Fighter," which airs Wednesdays on Fox Sports Net 1.
