Rory Feek said his 2-year-old daughter Indiana hasn't asked about her mom, country singer Joey Feek, since she died of cervical cancer March 4, thanks to efforts the young mother made in her dying days.

“Indy has not asked for her mama. Not one single time since Joey’s been gone,” Feek, who made up half of country music duo Joey+Rory with his late wife, wrote in a blog post on Sunday. “It’s almost as if she hasn’t noticed that she’s not here. And that is so sad… and oh, so wonderful – all at the same time.”

In early November, realizing she might not win her battle with cancer, Joey Feek made a decision about how to prepare the couple’s daughter for her death.

“She started going against everything in her being that told her ‘time was short’ so hold her baby even tighter… and longer… and more… and instead – she handed the baby to me, and sat alone in a bed and watched and listened as my relationship with Indy grew…and hers lessoned [sic],” Feek wrote.

Joey Feek died in her hometown of Alexandria, Indiana, on March 4 at age 40. Rory Feek, 49, noted in his blog post that Easter was her favorite holiday and said this year he reflected on the Bible verse John 3:30: “He must become greater; I must become less.”

“Who does that?” Feek wrote, referring to his late wife. “Who has that kind of strength and character? ... She let Indy fall more in love with me…and less in love with her.  She carried the pain on her own shoulders, to try to keep it off of mine. And even more so, off of Indy’s.”

Feek noted that the girl still had a loving relationship with her mother, but he became the one she wanted and needed first.

“She may not realize right now how incredible her mama is, but she will,” Feek wrote. “I have made a career out of documenting our lives, and her mother.”

Joey Feek had hoped to homeschool her daughter, USA Today noted. The girl, who was born with Down syndrome, has started preschool and therapy to help her learn to walk and talk.

Twitter users were touched by the story of selflessness.
