Rosie O'Donnell and Tatum O'Neal are involved in
"bicoastal relationship," a source tells People magazine, despite O'Donnell telling another publication that they are just friends.
O'Donnell, 53, filed for divorce earlier this year from wife Michelle Rounds after less than three years while O'Neal, 51, the former wife of tennis legend John McEnroe, told People that she has been dating mostly women.
"They are romantically involved," a source told People. "It's a bicoastal relationship . . . They are confidantes. They are hanging out. They have seen each other on both coasts, in Nyack [New York] and in Los Angeles."
People also reported that both attended the Broadway opening of the play "Hamilton" in August and were caught sharing an "intimate dinner" at Da Silvano in New York City.
"I like women," O'Neal told People in a May interview. "I definitely have been dating mostly women recently . . . I think women are the most amazing creatures on earth. They're gentle, and also more intelligent than the men that I've met recently. I don't have a steady right now, but I look forward to it."
O'Donnell's spokeswoman,
Cindi Berger, though, told the New York Post's Page Six that the two are just buddies.
"They've been friends for several years since they met in Chicago when Rosie did a show for OWN and Tatum did a docu-series for OWN," Berger told Page Six.
O'Donnell has struggled personally over the past year. The most recent controversy involves her 18-year-old adopted daughter Chelsea, who ran away from home last month and was later found at the home Steven Sheerer, an alleged heroin user.
Chelsea O'Donnell returned briefly before leaving again to stay with her biological mother, according to Page Six.
O'Neal, the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal, has bounced back from a decades-long battle with drugs and now says she has been clean and content. She and McEnroe divorced in 1992, but have three children together — Kevin, 29, Sean 28 and Emily 24.
