A tweet from Cardinals minor league pitcher Tyler Melling suggesting Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester may have put something on his glove during the World Series season opener has been deleted, but not before going viral and raising questions.
Melling on Wednesday tweeted, “Jon Lester using a little Vaseline inside the glove tonight?”
Fox News said. A picture showed up online showing a discolored area on Lester’s glove.

Major League Baseball issued a statement Thursday, Fox said, saying, “We cannot draw any conclusions from this video. There were no complaints from the Cardinals and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game.”
Deadspin published the video the MLB referred to in the release, which popped up in social media after Melling’s allegation and photo went viral. It was a Vine video of Lester apparently rubbing his hand against the area where the discoloration was.
Predictably, allegations that Lester may be cheating got many online either standing up for the pitcher or questioning if anyone is going to investigate the situation.
“That's 25 year old Tyler Melling, who has never pitched above A-ball. He's got to make a name for himself somehow, because it won’t be with his pitching,” posted one commenter on Deadspin.
Another almost immediately added, “I like this game. What's it called again? Ignore the Evidence and Kill the Messenger?”
While many are accusing Melling of being attention-seeking, some think that’s not the case, but that he raises a legitimate issue.
Others felt the video meant an investigation should be held:
