The royal wedding could cost $45 million, putting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's celebration among the 10 most expensive in history and almost $20 million more than William and Kate's wedding.
The figure was calculated by British wedding site Bridebook based on what is already known about the wedding plans and what other royal weddings have cost. The site estimates that costs will include a $70,000 cake, $150,000 in flowers, and $36,000 in reception food.
Most of the cost will be for security, with that expense being calculated at $42.1 million. Not only does the castle need to be secured, but all visitors to the town are being screened, and a $1.4 million counter-drone system will be in place for the ceremony, The Daily Beast reported.
While the royal family assures the public that it will be covering the wedding's cost, some in Britain are concerned about taxpayers being on the hook, which they will be for security, the bulk of the cost, the Daily Beast reported.
Markle is reportedly paying for her own dress for the event, which Bridebook estimated to cost $450,000 to $560,000. Many experts think Markle will choose a significantly less expensive dress, however, so as not to upstage Kate Middleton, who spent $350,000 on her gown.
The Daily Beast pointed out that the royal family may get significant discounts on the services it chooses because of the prestige associated, so the true cost of the wedding may be much lower than expected.
More than 28,000 Britons have signed a petition calling for the royal family to pay all the costs associated with the wedding, including security, the Daily Beast reported.
