Sam Champion has called it quits at The Weather Channel just three years after leaving ABC's "Good Morning America" to lead a new early show.
Champion, 55, anchored The Weather Channel's "AMHQ" in 2014, but he was replaced in September 2015 before moving over to the nightly show "23.5 Degrees" in March, according to the New York Daily News. Champion is now leaving TWC this week via a mutual agreement, a channel representative told the newspaper.
Champion has reportedly moved from from Atlanta, where The Weather Channel is based, to Miami, where he and his husband, Brazilian visual artist Rubem Robierb, live.
"While Sam will always be part of The Weather Channel family, we have mutually agreed to not enter into a new contract," The Weather Channel said in a statement Monday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"As our managing editor, host of our flagship 'AMHQ,' and his pioneering work on '23.5 Degrees,' Sam's leadership has helped transform The Weather Channel into the dynamic high-quality environment it is today, and we are grateful for his contribution and dedication. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
Champion spoke glowingly about the opportunity to work on "AMHQ" at The Weather Channel in March 2014, the newspaper noted.
"Their plans were genius to me," he said at the time. "The more I heard of the opportunities, the more interested I became. And I realized I would regret it if I said no and not try something that I considered momentous."
But, by early 2015, Jim Cantore had joined Champion on "AMHQ," and the meteorologist was replaced altogether by Stephanie Abrams in September 2015. He reportedly tried to go back to "GMA" at one point in 2015, but an ABC rep said at the time that the network's weather team was already established.
Champion then switched over to host "23.5 Degrees," a nod to the Earth's tilt on its axis, in February 2016, his Weather Channel bio states.
While at "Good Morning America," Champion often traveled to weather-affected locations like the Super Storm Sandy-ravaged Jersey shore and tornado-stricken Joplin, Missouri, where ABC News won a Peabody Award for its coverage, according to The Weather Channel.
Champion did the weather for WABC-TV in New York for 18 years before joining ABC News in 2006.
