Apple’s new iPhone 5s is faster than its competitors when it comes to opening apps and videos, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a longer lasting battery – and it’s nowhere near close.
That’s the finding from the British magazine Which?, which says the iPhone’s speed may be hindering its battery life.

Which? technology writer Jon Barrow wrote, “Our tests prove that while the batteries in the new iPhones last longer than those in the old iPhone 5, they still can’t match the capacity of those in the best Android phones.”
Samsung’s Galaxy S4 battery lasted some 17 hours and 31 minutes of calls and 6 hours and 45 minutes of online browsing. The Mini version of the phone logged nearly 12 and a half hours of calls on a full battery and more than 6 and a half hours of web browsing.
The new iPhone 5s logged nearly 11 hours of call time and nearly 5 hours of Internet surfing on a full battery.
Which? noted, however, that the Galaxy is a bit larger than the iPhone, enabling it to have a bigger battery.
“So there’s a clear trade-off between size and battery life,” wrote Which?, “And you’ll have to choose what’s more important — a compact iPhone that can be slipped into your pocket, and is easy to use one-handed, or a bigger, heavier Android-alternative that’ll keep going long after the iPhone has run out of juice.”
Which? said that it tested battery life using its own phone network simulator so that they could ensure the same signal strength in its experiment, as signal strength affects battery life. It also set the screen brightness on every phone to the same level. “Finally, we condition each phone’s battery before testing by fully charging it and then discharging it.”
Which? researchers also tested processing speeds on the latest phones from Apple, Samsung, HTC and LG. The iPhone 5S topped the list, with LG’s G2 coming in second place and Galaxy’s S4 in third. Processing speed measures such things as how fast a phone can open an app or play a video.
