"Madam Secretary" is adding Sara Ramirez as a series regular, returning the former "Grey's Anatomy" star to nighttime television.
The announcement comes shortly after regular Bebe Neuwirth, one of "Madam Secretary's" original cast members announced she was leaving the show, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Neuwirth played Nadine Tolliver, the chief of staff of Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord.
McCord is played by the show's star Tea Leoni.
"We're very excited that Sara is joining the cast," Barbara Hall, the show's executive producer and series creator said in a CBS statement. "She brings a fresh perspective and a fun, energetic quality to the State Department staff."
The show released a photo of Ramirez on Twitter, saying that she will play political strategist Kat Sandoval starting Nov. 19.
"Grey's Anatomy" fans watched Ramirez for more than a decade portray Dr. Callie Torres. She is best known for her Lady of the Lake role in Monty Python's "Spamalot," which earned her a Tony Award for best performance by a featured actress in a musical, CBS noted.
Ramirez also was the voice of Queen Miranda on the animated series "Sofia the First."
"We are thrilled to have Sara join the 'Madam Secretary' State Department team," Lori McCreary, the show's executive producer, said in a statement. "From the moment she walked on set with her talent, intellect and spirit, she became part of the family."
Fans expressed their excitement about Ramirez on social media.
