Schindler's List, For Auction on eBay, Is the Real Thing

By    |   Friday, 19 July 2013 03:41 PM EDT

Schindler's List, the actual document Oskar Schindler used to save as many as 1,000 Jewish refugees from the Nazis, is up for sale on eBay by a pair of California collectors for $3 million.

Gary Zimet and Eric Gazin told Fox News they hope the document will sell for as high as $5 million. The document is scheduled to officially go on auction Friday night.

"We decided to sell the list on eBay because it has over 100 million worldwide members, and this is a global story,” Gazin told the New York Post. "There are billionaires using the site, wealthy celebrities. We like the platform."

The Post said the winner will have to cough up a $10,000 deposit within 12 hours of winning — via wire transfer, credit card, or PayPal — with the balance due within seven days.

The version of the list being auctioned on eBay has been for sale before. The nephew of Schindler's confidant Itzhak Stern, Nathan Stern, offered it for $2.2 million in 2010 through Zimet, according to the Post. Itzhak Stern is credited with typing each of the versions of the list.

"Stern gave the list to his nephew, who sold it to a private collector in 2011," Zimet said to the Post. "Now this collector wishes to sell it."

Fox News said the "list" was named for Oskar Schindler, a businessman from Germany who used it to convince the Nazis that it carried the names of workers essential to his enamel-works factories.

Schindler created seven original versions but only four are known to still exist, said Fox News. Two versions are located in Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Museum. The third existing list is in the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington.

Fox News said the version on the auction block is on 14 onion-skin pages with 801 male names. The date April 18, 1945, is written in pencil on the first page.

Most people know of the list from Steven Spielberg's hit movie "Schindler's List," released in 1993. Liam Neeson played Schindler and Ben Kingsley played Itzhak Stern. The movie won seven Academy Awards, including best director and best movie trophies for Spielberg.
