Amy Schumer defended embattled comedian Bill Cosby in the "court of public opinion" during a skit on "Inside Amy Schumer" that got social media buzzing after being posted online Tuesday.
Schumer played Cosby's defense attorney, who essentially ignored all the rape and drugged sexual abuse allegations against the comedian from numerous women over the last 40 years. She played a clip of "The Cosby Show" for the jury and gave them pudding treats the comedian once advertised.
"Did anybody feel raped by that? How about drugged?" Schumer asked after playing music from "The Cosby Show's" opening, and then handing the jury sweaters similar to those worn by comedian,
noted Mediaite.
"Ladies and gentlemen, at this point Bill Cosby probably can't get in any legal trouble," Schumer told the jury. "That's not what this is about. This is about us not punishing ourselves for loving great comedy."
"Schumer … using nostalgia, ironclad logic, and yelling to prove that Cosby, a.k.a. Dr. Huxtable, could never be guilty of allegedly assaulting so many people," wrote
Vulture.com's Sean Fitz-Gerald. "She also pokes fun at the people who don't want their Cosby joy and memories tarnished."
Celebrity blogger and producer Jaime Primak went on Twitter to say Schumer crossed the line in parodying Cosby because rape is not a funny subject.
Beyond that, the vast majority of those on social media loved the skit and how they believe it skewered those who support the comedian.
