Country music singer and “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery has been ordered to pay his former manager $239,329 in back pay.
Todd Cassetty sued McCreery in July 2013, saying in legal documents that he was owed 15 percent of the singer’s gross revenue,
which is industry standard, CMT said. The lawsuit asked for $570,000.

The two did not have a written agreement, although at least one email presented in court showed that McCreery said he would pay 15 percent of his touring revenue to Cassetty, CMT said.
But the complaint said McCreery offered to pay just
2 percent of revenue when the pair parted ways in April 2013, The Tennessean reported.
When the lawsuit was filed last year, CMT reported that McCreery said in a statement, “There is no truth to these allegations. I have offered to pay Todd more than once, but he wanted an unreasonable amount for only five months of work. Anyone who knows me knows how I conduct myself, so I am not worried they will believe any of this. This is just an attempt to embarrass me and my family. The facts will come out when we have our day in court."
After the ruling, McCreery stated that he was pleased with what happened in court.
"It was always my intention to pay Mr. Cassetty and indeed had offered to pay him more than once,” McCreery said, according to CMT. “While it has been difficult to risk having my reputation challenged, I always believed that the truth would prevail, and it has.”
In a comment on the CMT article, a man who said he was a 20-year veteran in the music business said he was surprised Cassetty didn’t know to get a signed agreement.
“His former manager is BEYOND lucky he got what he did to begin with, considering he should have known better not to have a contract signed, especially representing a major artist,” the man wrote. "On the flip side...'only 5 months of work' doesn't make a difference... Scotty agreed to 15% period, so glad they met in the middle."
