Sean Combs, who was named the top-earning celebrity of 2017, has changed his name for the fifth time since the 1990s and now says he will only answer to "Brother Love."
Combs posted a video on Twitter Saturday in which he explained his name change decision, saying, "I have some very serious, serious news. I've been praying on this … I know it's risky because it could come off as corny to some people … I've decided to change my name again. I'm just not who I am before. I'm something different. So my new name is Love, a.k.a. Brother Love."
The rapper and music producer first changed his name to "Puff Daddy" in the 1990s at the start of his career. In 2001, he decided to go by P. Diddy soon after being acquitted of gun and bribery charges after a Manhattan night club shooting, telling MTV he needed "something fresh."
In 2014, he went back to Puff Daddy, insisting on Twitter that he had never changed from that name.
The latest iteration seems to have some spiritual component. He finished his Twitter video, posted on his birthday, by saying, "God is the greatest, I give all glory," then thanking his parents.
Some of his Twitter followers brought up a former WWE manager, Bruce Pritchard, who used the same name, while others were just skeptical of yet another change.
