Actor Sean Malone is in critical condition after a near drowning in the waters off a Boston beach on Monday.

The 54-year-old "Gone Baby Gone" actor, a South Boston local, was swimming far out into the water off the M Street Beach when he was spotted by local firefighter Chris Flaherty, who was off-duty at the time, according to The Boston Globe. Flaherty said he began to become concerned over how far out Malone was swimming.

After grabbing a paddleboard and launching off after the swimmer, Flaherty flagged down a nearby boat for help when he could no longer see the man.

Flaherty, along with local teens Joey Binda, John Feeney, and Elliot Chauvet, began searching for Malone – whose identity they didn't know at the time – before finally finding him face-down and unconscious in the water.

“It took four of us to pull them up on the boat. He was a really big guy,” Binda told WBZ-TV. “We all knew what we had to do and we did it.”

After they administered CPR to him, Malone was transported to the Boston Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition as of Monday night, according to The Daily Mail.

Flaherty, who knows Malone’s brother, Boston Deputy Fire Chief Scott Malone, said he was shaken by the event, said the Globe.

Malone’s family was very grateful for the rescuers’ quick responses.

“Sean’s family just wanted to pass on that they’re grateful for the work everyone has done so far to give Sean a chance, and they’re praying for the best,” said the Boston Fire department’s spokesman Steve MacDonald.

“I’m really glad that nobody panicked. I’m just glad we got to rescue him. It brought me and my friends a lot closer.” said Binda, per The Inquisitr. “It’s kind of awesome that we saved a guy’s life.”

Besides “Gone Baby Gone,” Malone is known for his role in  “The Fighter,” alongside Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.
