Social networking sites are abuzz over a college student’s plea for money from his mother that led to anonymous Bitcoin donations totaling more than $22,000.
The unidentified young man held up a sign on ESPN’s College Game Day that read, "Hi Mom Send" above a Bitcoin logo and a QR code for a Bitcoin wallet. (QR codes are also known as Quick Response code,s which have become common in consumer advertising and often represent a URL for a website.) The image made it onto the front page of Reddit, and curious onlookers soon found the account to which the code linked and started making Bitcoin donations.
