Seth MacFarlane's "Duck Dynasty" shot during his acceptance of the Louis XIII Genius Award at Sunday's Critics' Choice Television Awards also mocked the network that broadcasted the program.
The "Family Guy" creator behind the movie "A Million Ways to Die in the West" first made fun of himself being called a genius before, seemingly out of the blue,
taking a shot at "Duck Dynasty," Variety reported.
"Being called a genius in Hollywood is kind of like being called thin at Disneyland," he said before making a reference to A&E, which was broadcasting the awards show. "Let's also not forget, I'm being called a genius on the network that airs 'Duck Dynasty.' This is a show whose cast members believe hurricanes are caused by gay marriage. I wish I were joking."
TheBlaze’s Dave Urbanski said the comments should not surprise those who follow MacFarlane or "Family Guy."
"MacFarlane is no stranger to controversy or criticism," Urbanski wrote. "'Family Guy' is well-known for edgy, even offensive humor. In 2013 his sitcom 'Dads' took heat over reviews calling it crass, sexist, and exploiting racial stereotypes."
A&E briefly suspended "Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson in 2013 for comments he made in a magazine about gay morality, but the network faced stiff viewer backlash and a threatened boycott before he was
reinstated, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
The winners of the Critics' Choice Awards are selected based on votes from the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, which includes TV, radio, and Internet journalists who cover the television industry.
Reaction to MacFarlane's "Duck Dynasty" comments on social media was mixed.
