The baby boy who was rescued from a sewage pipe in China earlier this week has been returned to his maternal grandparents, and sources say the mother will not face criminal charges for abandoning the child.
The baby, dubbed Baby 59 after his incubator number in the hospital, has captivated the world since his dramatic two-hour rescue over the weekend.

Baby 59 was reportedly
lodged in a sewage pipe Saturday after his 22-year-old mother gave birth to him in a toilet on the fourth floor of an apartment building in Jinhua, in the eastern province of Zhejiang. The baby was rescued and taken to a local hospital, and the mother later
admitted to police that she had accidentally let the child fall into the pipe.
The woman said she could not afford an abortion and had been forced to conceal her pregnancy after the father, with whom she had had a one-night stand, refused to offer her support, according to reports from state-run media.
Police concluded that the incident was an accident and said they are unlikely to file criminal charges, the Jinhua Evening News reported, even though some say they should have.

"The local police may have considered the woman was still young and did not have any malice, and have come to the decision from the human perspective,
but it sends a terrible signal to the public," Duan Wanjin, a criminal lawyer based in Xi'an, told The Associated Press.
The baby's father has reportedly come forward and requested a paternity test.
