Sherri Shepherd, former host of "The View," has agreed to pay for child support in a messy divorce that involved a baby born through a surrogate.
After Shepherd battled ex-husband Lamar Sally on fraud charges, the entertainer was ordered to pay $4,100 a month in child support — or $49,200 annually — with those obligations increasing to $4,600 per month
when the child turns 13, reported TMZ.
The agreement allows Shepherd to continue pursuing her fraud case against her ex in court, though. She claims that Sally obtained a surrogate to carry the child for the purpose of getting child support from her, according to TMZ.
If Shepherd prevails, she would no longer be obligated to pay the thousands annually in child support.
In April, a judge ruled that Shepherd was the legal mother of the boy named
Lamar Sally, Jr., according to People.
"It's bittersweet," Sally told People back in April about the judge's decision. "I'm glad it's over, but I feel sad what it had to come to. Now I can go back to L.A. and tend to my son."
Craig Bluestein, a legal representative for the child, told People that the judge's decision to name Shepherd as the mother came from her initial support for the pregnancy before her relationship with Sally turned bitter.
"There was some additional evidence put on the record involving some video clips involving Ms. Shepherd," Bluestein told People. "[Shepherd expressed] excitement over her and Lamar going to have a baby through the help of a surrogate carrier with no genetic connection."
"I feel very good. I think little LJ, who is not yet 1-year-old, needed some protection. Justice was served today," Bluestein continued.
Shepherd started her career as a stand-up comedian while working as a legal secretary. She had roles in the television series "Cleghorne" and "Less Than Perfect" before replacing Star Jones on ABC daytime talk show
"The View" in 2007, reported TV Guide.
She has since appeared in her own situation comedy "Sherri" on Lifetime and published her own autobiography in 2009, "Permission Slips: Every Woman's Guide to Giving Herself a Break." Shepherd divorced her first husband, Jeff Tarpley, in 2006.
