Sherri Shepherd's return to "The View" on Thursday was deeply marred by a callous joke she made about trying to abandon her children — something she actually tried to do in recent months.
During the episode, which was filmed in mid-April, Raven-Symoné told the all-women panel, "I want a baby so bad. I've wanted one since I was 15."
In response, Shepherd quipped, "Girl, I got one or two you could have of mine."
According to People magazine, Shepherd had just two weeks prior been in court over the custody of her 10-month-old son. Shepherd and ex-husband Lamar Sally had the baby, Lamar Jr., via surrogate just three months before splitting, and during the divorce proceedings in April a judge ruled that both were responsible for him.
As The Daily Mail reported, Shepherd had previously stated that she felt "tricked" into having the baby, and that she "has no connection or responsibility to the child."
The surrogate, Jessica Bartholomew, said it was clear Shepherd didn't want to be the mother after divorce papers were filed, and that she was shocked the TV celebrity had changed her mind.
The divorce and custody battle has clearly left Shepherd embittered, as elsewhere in the show she announced to one of her co-panelists, "Girl, don't tell me about divorce being expensive," she said. "I'll tell you about divorce being expensive."
