Megan Thee Stallion has filed for a new restraining order against Tory Lanez, claiming the convicted rapper continues to torment her despite serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting her in the feet during a 2020 incident.
In the Tuesday filing reviewed by the Los Angeles Times, the "Savage" rapper, born Megan Pete, claimed that it is a "trauma" she has been forced to relive, as her convicted shooter — whose legal name is Daystar Peterson — continues his "campaign of harassment" from prison.
Before his conviction, Peterson repeatedly breached pretrial protective and gag orders designed to safeguard Pete's safety and mental health, the filing states. A 2021 violation led to his bail being increased by $60,000.
In her filing, Pete alleges that he now harasses her with the help of "third-party online 'bloggers,' who Mr. Peterson employs to spread defamatory statements about Ms. Pete." The filing notes that this undermines the criminal trial that put Peterson behind bars and has caused Pete "severe emotional distress."
Pete's filing referenced Peterson's prison call records and social media activity from his associates as evidence of a coordinated campaign targeting her. Despite this, the 2021 Grammy winner has struggled to secure "any formal protection against Mr. Peterson's attacks," as the requirements for obtaining a criminal protective order postconviction are exceptionally stringent.
"It is counterintuitive and wholly illogical that Ms. Pete had protection by way of protective orders and gag orders issued against Mr. Peterson, while he was deemed innocent, i.e., pre-conviction, but that such protections are no longer available to Ms. Pete, due to mere technicality in the law, now that he has been convicted and proven guilty," the filing said.
In an interview with Elle last year, the rapper revealed that the ongoing discussion of the 2020 incident involving Peterson, coupled with skepticism from some within the music industry, led her to experience a deep depression.
"I didn't feel like making music. I was in such a low place that I didn't even know what I wanted to rap about. I wondered if people even cared anymore. There would be times that I'd literally be backstage or in my hotel, crying my eyes out, and then I'd have to pull Megan Pete together and be Megan Thee Stallion," she told the outlet.
