Horror movie fans are mourning the loss of iconic actor Sid Haig. The 80-year-old was rushed to a hospital last week for injuries sustained during a fall and subsequently suffered breathing complications before passing away on Saturday.
His wife Susan L. Oberg confirmed the news in a heartfelt Instagram post.
"He has returned to the Universe, a shining star in her heavens," she wrote. "He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be. He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us."
Haig's career spanned decades and included appearances in over 70 films and 350 television shows, according to his official biography. His most memorable role, however, was as Captain Spaulding in the horror cult classic "House of 1000 Corpses."
Haig first began exploring his acting skills during high school. A lucky break came in his senior year when musical comedy star Dennis Morgan saw him performing on stage during last-minute preparations for a high school production.
Morgan convinced Haig to pursue an acting career while continuing his studies. Two years later, Haig was enrolled at the world-famous Pasadena Playhouse.
His first role in a UCLA student film helped catapult him into the spotlight and paved the way for an extensive acting career that garnered him a loyal cult following.
Soon after news of his death broke, tributes and messages of condolences flooded social media, with fans hailing him as "an inspiration" and "amazing actor."
Oberg, meanwhile, has asked the public to grant friends and family members the privacy and time to mourn their loss.
