The Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has issued a recall of certain varieties of its beer in 12-ounce bottles that were produced at its brewery in Mills River, North Carolina.
The recall was made over concerns about a packaging flaw where a glass shard could break loose and fall into the bottle. Sierra Nevada said it has not received any information of complaints of injuries because of the flaw on the bottles, USA Today reported.
"While we believe this concern impacts roughly one in every 10,000 (0.01 percent) of our bottles packaged during this time, Sierra Nevada has set the standard for quality in the craft brewing industry since 1980 and we have decided to take this precaution to ensure the safety of our consumers," a statement on the company's website said Sunday.
The products affected, according to the Sierra Nevada website, are the Pale Ale packaged bottles (production date Dec. 5-Jan. 8); Torpedo Extra IPA (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); Tropical Torpedo (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); Sidecar Orange Pale Ale (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); Beer Camp Golden IPA (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); Optra Vez (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); Nooner (Dec. 5-Jan. 13); and the Hop Hunter IPA (Dec. 5-Jan. 13).
States included in the recall include Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Consumers who purchased beer in question will be eligible for full compensation of the purchase price. Sierra Nevada said beer brewed and packaged at its facility in Chico, California, is not affected by the recall.
Mike Bennett, chief supply chain officer, said in a news release that the company is working with its supplier to determine the root cause of the bottling flaw.
Sierra Nevada is working with distributors and retailers to pull the recalled products off the shelves.
