Smart Car tipping, a new vandalism trend, has made compact car owners in San Francisco nervous.

As of Monday, as many as four Smart Cars were found tipped over or perched up on the back wheels throughout the Bay Area, KGO.com reported.

The pint-sized, two-door Smart Cars only weigh about 1,500 pounds, making them a prime target for tipping. Witnesses have reported seeing a group of suspects in dark sweatshirts tipping the cars, but police have not yet made any arrests.

"I thought they looked like they were up to no good and then sure enough they walk up to this Smart Car right here, all huddle around it and just lift it up and set it on its hind legs, like a dog on its hind legs — that's pretty much it," witness Brandon Michael told KGO.com.

"Whoever is doing this just has misdirected anger," Shelley Gallivan, a Smart Car tipping victim, told NBC Bay Area.

The prank is nothing new. High school students have been cow tipping, or knocking over sleeping animals, for years. In the 1960s and 1970s, picking up Volkswagen Beetles was the fad. And the Toronto Star even ran an article in 2009 titled, "Tipping Smart Cars the Latest Prank Trend."

Police said they are actively searching for six to eight suspects who would face felony vandalism charges if caught.
