A Canadian sniper in Iraq recorded the longest kill shot in history – “from more than two miles away” – by picking off an ISIS militant and disrupting an attack on friendly forces.

The unnamed sniper’s bullet reportedly took 10 seconds to reach its target, traveling 3,450 meters, according to USA Today.

The shot shattered the previous record – a feat that was held by a British sniper Craig Harrison who recorded a 2,475-meter shot (approximately a mile and a half) in Afghanistan back in 2009.

“The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces,” a military source told Toronto’s Globe and Mail. “Instead of dropping a bomb that could potentially kill civilians in the area, it is a very precise application of force and because it was so far away, the bad guys didn’t have a clue what was happening.”

“The Canadian Special Operations Command can confirm that a member of Joint Task Force 2 successfully hit a target at 3,540 meters,” the military said in a statement. “For operational security reasons and to preserve the safety of our personnel and our Coalition partners we will not discuss precise details on when and how this incident took place.”

The military source said 3,450 meters “is at the distance where you have to account not just for the ballistics of the round, which change over time and distance, you have to adjust for wind, and the wind would be swirling.”

“You have to adjust for him firing from a higher location downward and as the round drops you have to account for that,” the source added. “And from that distance you actually have to account for the curvature of the Earth.”

The source also praised Canada’s sniper system.

“Canada has a world-class sniper system,” the source said. “It is not just a sniper. They work in pairs … This is a skill set that only a very few people have.”

The longest kill shot recorded by an American in military history is credited to U.S. Sgt. Bryan Kremer, who shot and killed an Iraqi militant from 2,300 meters away back in 2004.
