South Carolina clowns seen only by children, mostly, are obsessing folks around Greenville County after sketchy reports about them trying to lure kids into the woods with money.
There are also rumors of a "clownhouse," occupied by several of the creepy guys who give most people the chills when they meet not at the circus.
Drew Pinciaro of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office confirmed this week to WYFF-TV of Greenville that deputies conducted a follow-up investigation on Aug. 21 after receiving two phone calls about a man in a clown outfit at the Fleetwood Manor Apartments attempting to entice children. He said they came up empty handed.
"This case has been assigned to our follow-up unit for further investigation and we also have deputies extra patrolling that area," Pinciaro said.
The Greenville News said one of the clown stories was inspired by a letter – which ended up on Facebook – reportedly sent by the Fleetwood Manor property manager to residents warning them about complaints of clowns attempting to lure children into a nearby wooded area.
"Obviously, this is the type of claim that we need to take serious whether it's valid or not," said Deputy Ryan Flood. "At this time, these are isolated incidents that have not been confirmed. I would say there's not much reason to be fearful."
Fleetwood Manor resident Donna Arnold told WYFF her son told her about seeing the clowns and that it scared her.
"At first, I thought he was telling a fib and I said, 'Go in the house and we'll talk about this again,' because I didn't want it all over the place," she said. "And then the next day, there was like 30 kids that came up to me and said, 'Ms. Donna, Ms. Donna, there's clowns in the woods.' My child was with me, so I knew they had to see something. There was more than one kid that seen them, so I feel confident that he was telling the truth."
Another resident told authorities she saw a large clown with a blinking nose about 2:30 a.m. last Sunday. She said the clown waved to her, but didn't speak or approach her.
According to the Daily Beast, authorities were led to a home where a group of clowns supposedly lived but they found "no signs of suspicious activity or characters dressed in clown attire" at the residence.
