For all its accolades and Academy Award nominations, "American Sniper" couldn't fend off "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" at the box office last week.
With a first-week haul of $56 million in ticket sales, the big-screen children's cartoon character shot past the highly acclaimed story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, which fell to second place with $24.2 million.
"Sniper" has earned $282 million and numerous Oscar nominations, including one for Bradley Cooper as best actor. The movie review aggregating site
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 73 percent rating.
Amid largely positive reviews,
"Sniper" has been criticized by celebrities, including Bill Maher and
former Navy SEAL and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura.
"Jupiter Ascending," a fantasy starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, finished third with estimated box office receipts of $19 million in its opening weekend.
"Seventh Son," a 3-D fantasy-action film starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, opened in fourth with $7.1 million, while "Paddington" rounded out the Top 5 with $5.4 million.
