Spring High School Stabbings Leave Texas Student Dead, 3 Hurt

By    |   Wednesday, 04 September 2013 02:20 PM EDT

Stabbings at Spring High School near Houston on Wednesday morning left one student dead and three others wounded in what police say could have been a gang-related incident.

The stabbings occurred in the school's hallway at approximately 7:10 a.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

A 17-year-old student was fatally stabbed to death in the hallway, according to Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

Two students suffered minor injuries and were taken to Houston Northwest Medical Center for treatment, while a third, whose condition was not reported, was flown to the Texas Medical Center Memorial Hermann via a Life Flight medical helicopter, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"There is some information that this may have been gang related," Garcia told the Chronicle, though he did not provide further information.

The stabbing began as a fight that escalated when the youths pulled weapons on each other, Garcia said, adding that the weapons used in the stabbings have not been recovered.

Authorities were interviewing three persons of interest, all of them students at Spring High School.

Police are also searching for a white Ford F-150 with the words "Grim Reaper" written on it, the Chronicle reported.

Further details about the victims have yet to be released by authorities, however the Chronicle reports that a spokesman for the family of one of the victims said the dispute had been ongoing and was between groups of young men belonging to different races.

There are no metal detectors on the campus, which has some 3,000 students and is known for having had violence between students in the past.

Following the stabbing, the school was placed on lockdown, local ABC News affiliate KTRK-TV reported.

Children were released to their parents between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. through the rear of the school, where parents were allowed to gather in the school stadium's parking lot.

Parents were informed of the incident via a text message from the school three hours after the stabbing occurred, one parent told the Chronicle.

In the coming days, both the school and the Sheriff's Office says it will provide additional security at the campus in case there is a retaliatory strike if the violence was gang related, KTRK-TV reported.
