Two Squarespace employees are re-creating famous works of art on their breaks with things found lying around the office, and they’re making a splash on Instagram.
From the "Mona Lisa" to Vermeer’s "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" to "Napoleon Crossing the Alps," the creativity of Francesco Fragomeni and Chris Limbrick shines out of
Squarespace employees' FoolsDoArt Instagram account.
“This whole thing really just started with us goofing around,”
Fragomeni and Limbrick wrote in an e-mail to The Washington Post. “The first re-creation was Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ from the Sistine Chapel, which happened when we were sitting on one of the couches in the office during a lunch break. Chris kept trying to poke Francesco’s hand for no purpose other than to simply get on his nerves [typical]. Someone grabbed a phone and snapped some pictures and it somehow just morphed into us posing as the mural.”
It was Limbrick’s mom who put it all together. In the email to the Post, the pair said, “We didn’t initially think anything of it. Chris ended up texting the photo to his mom, who then stitched our shot with a photograph from the Sistine Chapel and texted it back to Chris. When we saw that, it was a big ‘Aha!’ moment.”
“Pretty great, right? Let’s take a deeper look at their work,” Post writer Sarah Larime wrote. “I’m no art critic ... but I feel pretty confident in saying this interpretation of 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' is basically flawless.”
On their website, the two say, “All of the painting remixes are done at the Squarespace office in NYC. The only rules are that all props must be things found in the office and all editing must be done on a phone (Android or iPhone). Enjoy!”
