Steve Israel: GOP Base 'Animated by Racism'; Follows Pelosi Lead

New York Democrat Steve Israel says he believes some of his Republican colleagues in Congress are "animated by racism." His comment was the latest in what many see as Democrats playing the race card as the 2014 midterm election approaches.

In a Sunday interview with CNN's Candy Crowley on her show "State of the Union," the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said, "To a significant extent, the Republican base does have elements that are animated by racism. That's unfortunate."

When asked by Crowley if he believed his "Republican colleagues in Congress are racist?" the New York City representative replied, "Not all of them, no. Of course not."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made similar remarks last week

"I think race has something to do with the fact that they are not bringing up an immigration bill," she said at a news conference, Politico reported. "I’ve heard them say to the Irish, 'If it was you, it would be easy.'"

In a speech last Wednesday to Al Sharpton's National Action Network, Attorney General Eric Holder implied that the treatment he and the president received was unprecedented for their offices because of their race.

Former Florida Rep. Joe Scarborough said on his MSNBC "Morning Joe" show last Thursday that playing the race card is nothing new for the Obama administration

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Religious leaders Ralph Reed and Russell Moore wrote that a immigration reform is the "moral thing to do for the soul of our nation."

"The message is clear: Reform is the right thing to do for our economy and needed for a safe and secure border," Reed and Moore wrote. "Reform will require moral courage and leadership, but it is necessary. . . The current system is inadequate for the country's needs, and it is inequitable as well."
