Nobody wants to experience that heart-sinking realization that their car was just stolen Auto theft is on the rise in the U.S., as Carsurance noted recently.
Sometimes it is due to negligence, sometimes it is just bad luck and sometimes it is because the vehicle you drive is high risk.
USA Today recently took a look at data released on car theft in the U.S. to determine the most-stolen new cars in the country. The report was based on the frequency of theft, which gauged how likely a car is to get stolen.
What emerged was a pattern. Electric vehicles were the least likely to be stolen while more expensive cars were often the targets of theft.
On the list were several pickups and Dodge muscle cars including a Dodge Charger with a HEMI engine, which is stolen roughly 5.4 times more often than other vehicles in the U.S.
On the opposite end of the spectrum the four-door BMW 3-series sedan is listed as the least likely car to be stolen along with the four-wheel-drive Tesla Model S and Model X.
Based on USA Today's list, here are the top nine most-stolen vehicles of the 2016-18 model years:
