Stolen Thunderbird Found After 33 Years, 750 Miles Away (Video)

A Thunderbird stolen 33 years ago was found 750 miles away in Washington state and returned to its owner in California last week.

"Beautiful. Just a few bumps and bruises but, boy, not much has changed, considering it's a 50-year-old car, has been gone for 33 years, have no idea where it's been," Gary Chartrand of Sacramento, California, told ABC News.

Chartrand last saw his classic 1964 T-bird in 1981, just before it was stolen from a local bar he was working at. He originally bought it as a "divorce present" to himself just a year before for $1,600.

Police recovered the car 750 miles away in Washington state when someone tried to register the vehicle, and it was on record as stolen. The theft happened so long ago, however, that the police are still trying to locate the original theft report.

Nonetheless, the authorities were able to contact Chartrand, and send the vehicle by truck right to his front door.

"I don’t even remember how to get into the glove box," he told reporters from NBC as he hopped in his Ford for the first time in over 30 years.

"It’s just nice to have it back," he said.
