Students Trapped on School Buses on Atlanta Snow-Snarled Freeways

By    |   Wednesday, 29 January 2014 06:37 AM EST

The National Guard is sending military Humvees onto Atlanta's winter weather-snarled freeway system in an attempt to move stranded school buses and get food and water to people.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said the Georgia State Patrol is also sending troopers to schools where children remain stranded after spending the night there after snow began falling Tuesday afternoon. He said in a statement early Wednesday morning that state transportation crews are continuing to treat roads and bring gas to stranded motorists.

The city's downtown connector, numerous Interstate 75 entrance and exit ramps in suburban Cobb County, and stretches of the freeway in other counties were impassible at times after hours of snow Tuesday, Georgia Department of Transportation officials said.

Atlanta, hub to major corporations and the world's busiest airport, once again found itself unprepared to deal with the chaos – despite assurances that city officials had learned their lessons from a 2011 ice storm that brought the city to its knees.

A sea of red brake lights remained at a standstill along a dozen lanes of the Downtown Connector shortly before dawn Wednesday.

Traffic came to a halt along major arteries on Tuesday as many ended their workdays early and tried navigating slippery highways that rarely are covered in snow.

Deal plans a briefing at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Capitol to discuss the state's "ongoing disaster response."

Police in suburban Atlanta said they helped deliver a baby girl along a highway when snow and ice brought traffic to a crawl and sometimes as halt.

Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose said the baby girl was delivered around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday. It's unclear if her parents were headed to the hospital when they got stuck in the horn-honking snarl that caused 30-minute commutes to turn into hours-long odysseys.

Rose called the delivery "flawless."

He says an ambulance arrived just after the baby was delivered and the girl was taken to a local hospital. The parents' identities have not been released.
