Subway Jared Killed Off as Victim of Latest Celebrity Death Hoax

By    |   Wednesday, 07 May 2014 01:07 PM EDT

Jared Fogle, the Subway spokesman who lost a remarkable amount of weight eating at the fast-food restaurant, died over the weekend at the age of 36 while eating the foot-longs that changed his life — or that's what the Internet would have you believe, anyway.

The latest target of the death hoaxes that often plague social media, Fogle recently responded to the false report from a website called JaredRemembered.com, confirming that he is, in fact, alive and well and that any report to the contrary is false, Hollywood Life reported.

Over the weekend the hashtag "RIPSubwayJared" went viral, trending on multiple sites.

Many seemed skeptical of the report because it was not the first time a death hoax has been perpetrated against Fogle, a fact one Twitter user pointed out with sympathy.

Many others seemed to also have suspected it was an intentionally misleading hashtag, and made or found poorly Photoshopped pictures to tweet out with tongue-in-cheek humor.

Many other death hoaxes have been perpetrated over the years against an ever-growing list of celebrities, including Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo Di Caprio, Michael Schumacher, Mark Calaway, and Macaulay Culkin.

Fogle seemed to take the hoax in stride, retweeting a note from a fan who said the hoax was the Internet's way of calling attention to him out of affection.
