Justin Timberlake will headline the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but can the Grammy award-winning singer crack the top 10 Super Bowl halftime shows of all time?
This is Timberlake's second appearance however, considering his 2004 wardrobe malfunction during which he accidently exposed Janet Jackson's breast on stage during Super Bowl LII, the "Sexy Back" singer knows what is at stake.
Aside from living that moment down, Timberlake also has some pretty big shoes to fill.
With 51 Super Bowl halftime shows to date, some of music's greatest stars have previously delivered memorable performances.
Here is a look at some of those moments in history:
1. Michael Jackson (1993) — The King of Pop blew fans away when he took to the stage as one of a handful of artist to perform solo, delivering all-time favorite hits "Billie Jean" and "Black or White," sports website YardBarker.com noted.
2. Aerosmith, *NSYNC and Britney Spears (2001) — This medley of performances made Super Bowl history as the halftime show to feature the most star power, with *NSYNC opening the stage before swopping places with Aerosmith. The performance culminated in the stars being joined by Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly, KXAN reported.
3. Diana Ross (1996) — First Ross was lowered to the stage on a crane made of sparklers to deliver her performance, Rolling Stone noted, then she was airlifted out of the stadium by a helicopter — a memorable night.
4. The Black Eyed Peas and Slash (2011) — The collaboration drew heavy criticism from fans of rock, who criticized Fergie's deliverance of "Sweet Child O' Mine," which according to CBS Sports, she butchered.
5. Beyoncé (2012) — Although there was some disappointment that Beyoncé did not perform with her husband Jay Z, as was rumored at the time, fans forgave her when she reunited with members of Destiny's Child onstage to perform a number of the group's old hits, YardBarker.com said.
6. Paul McCartney (2005) — The former "Beatle" kept it sweet and simple in his performance, opening up with "Drive My Car" before launching into a stadium-shaking rendition of "Live and Let Die," according to Rolling Stone.
7. Tanya Tucker, Clint Black, Travis Tritt and The Judds (1994) — While there was nothing notably wrong with this performance, there was nothing notably right about it either. Coming a year after Michael Jackson's powerful deliverance, this show was doomed before it was even on stage, CBS noted.
8. Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers (2014) — According to YardBarker.com, this was one of the most watched Super Bowl halftime shows in history.
9. Prince (2007) — Standing in the rain, Prince hammered out what Sportsnet.com described as "a killer rendition of Purple Rain."
10. Katy Perry and Missy Elliott (2015) — Dancing palm trees, a performance by Left Shark, this show had it all, Rolling Stone noted.
The crowning moment? When Perry rode on a star across the stadium while singing "Firework," according to CBS.
