A $5,178 Super Bowl ticket price is looking to be the norm this season, and many are predicting prices will climb even higher.
USA Today reported that average ticket prices topped $5,300 in the minutes after the Carolina Panthers secured an easy victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night, winning the NFC title. The Panthers will now face the Denver Broncos at the new Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 7 for Super Bowl 50.
"The biggest driver of ticket prices this year is less about which teams are playing, but where the game is," said Chris Leyden of SeatGeek.com, an online ticket hub. "The Bay Area has one of the highest median incomes in the nation. There’s a lot of wealth out there."
Last year's average ticket price for the Patriots-Seahawks matchup was much lower, around $4,200. Past games have been even less.
This year, the cheapest tickets are hovering around $3,600, while the most expensive tickets are more than $22,000.
Outside of California, a lot of the ticket demand — roughly 10 percent — has come from North Carolina.
"Super Bowl tickets are pricey because demand is high, and supply is tightly controlled by the NFL,"
explained the San Francisco Chronicle. "Of the 75,000 seats available, 5 percent go to the host 49ers, 34 percent are divided among NFL teams, 25 percent go to the league office, and 17.5 percent go to the AFC and NFC champions."
StubHub spokesman Cameron Papp said, "It’s going to be different than any other year. The market is going to fluctuate a lot, but I wouldn’t expect as significant a drop as in years past."
