Following a Mizzou swimmer's suicide death in 2011, the University of Missouri held its first news conference Wednesday on the alleged rape of Sasha Menu Courey with President Tim Wolfe saying the school has launched an independent investigation on how the situation was handled by school officials.
The school had previously addressed the
rape allegations, which were detailed last week in an ESPN Outside the Lines story, only through emails and releases.

Wolfe spoke to reporters for 30 minutes, the
Salt Lake City Dispatch reported, offering his heartfelt response to the allegations that the university did not investigate after Courey told personnel she was raped by MU football players.
Wolfe said he recommended to the UM System Board that all issues relating to the incident be investigated.
“It’s unfortunately a tragic situation that’s kind of personal to me because I’m a parent of a female freshman student athlete myself,” Wolfe said, per the Dispatch. “What’s important to us at the University of Missouri is the safety of our students. We take this very seriously. Our goal is to help Sashas of the world and try to give them the necessary mental health support or whatever support they need, for any of our students, in a way that we can never let this happen again.”
A sexual assault case was opened regarding the incident, the Dispatch reported.
“Our detectives will take a look at the information and determine what leads need to be followed, and what needs to happen next,” Sgt. Joe Bernhard said. “Cases like this are problematic when there's a four-year delay and no [living] victim.”
Menu Courey, who was being treated in a Boston facility for her borderline personality disorder, killed herself in June 2011, the Dispatch reported.
