Symphony of the Seas is officially the largest cruise ship afloat.
The luxury vessel set sail this week after 36 months of construction, leaving its port in France for Spain where it will embark from Barcelona upon its maiden voyage for Royal Caribbean at the end of March, The Orlando Sentinel reported.
Symphony of the Seas first will sail through the Mediterranean, visiting ports in Spain, Italy and Rome, before repositioning itself in Miami, where it will embark upon an Eastern Caribbean cruise, visiting ports in Mexico, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico, Royal Caribbean said.
The company’s Harmony of the Seas previously held the record for the world’s largest cruise ship, but the 18-story Symphony of the Seas at 1,188 feet in length now wears the crown.
Both ships form part of Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class series, which has been pushing the envelope in the cruise industry with each newly launched vessel escalating in size, USA Today reported.
“The Oasis Class has been a trend-setting design, but the team has evolved the design to build on that success to provide even more incredible family adventures,” said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, the Sentinel said.
Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, added that Symphony of the Seas takes family vacationing to a new level by blending “vibrant, new restaurants, activities and unparalleled entertainment – all purposefully designed around vacationers’ preferences.”
When it comes to entertainment, passengers on the cruise ship are spoiled with choices, including laser tag, ice skating, rock climbing and even being served a drink by robots in the futuristic Bionic Bar, Fox News reported.
The holy grail of sports bars can also be found onboard the ship, with 30 big-screen televisions strategically placed for sports fans’ viewing pleasure.
The Symphony of the Seas also boasts impressive accommodation options for those prepared to fork out a lot extra.
The two-story family suite includes an air hockey table, table tennis on the balcony and even a slide while the royal suite class features a more minimal but equally luxurious feel.
