T-Mobile has partnered with Netflix to give streaming subscriptions to its unlimited data family plan customers at no additional cost.
Customers with at least two T-Mobile One unlimited data voice lines can take advantage of the offer, CNET reported. Those with older plans or who get a senior citizen discount will need to upgrade in order to get Netflix for free.
T-Mobile’s Netflix on Us program is another attempt to stand out from the competition, including Verizon and AT&T. The offer includes the standard Netflix plan for viewing on up to two devices simultaneously, which normally costs $9.99 a month. If you want the $11.99 plan that allows four streams and higher quality video, you can pay the extra $2 in your T-Mobile bill, The Verge reported.
The deal will start Sept. 12, and customers can get it started online, in a T-Mobile store, or by calling T-Mobile, the Verge reported.
The move comes as AT&T looks to buy Time Warner, which owns HBO, and Verizon has recently bought AOL and Yahoo. Rather than trying to gain its own exclusive programming, T-Mobile has decided to offer the entirety of Netflix to its customers, The Verge noted.
Both Netflix and T-Mobile referenced the growing trend of watching digital content on mobile devices like phones and tablets. Americans now spend more than 50 percent of their screen time on smartphones and digital devices rather than traditional TV, a T-Mobile blog post said.
T-Mobile customers expressed their understandable happiness on Twitter.
