A university professor who said Texans deserved Hurricane Harvey because they voted for President Donald Trump in the 2016 election has been fired.

The University of Tampa fired a visiting professor of sociology Tuesday after he tweeted that Texans deserved Hurricane Harvey because they voted for President Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

Kenneth Storey, a visiting professor of sociology at the University of Tampa, was fired after tweeting the hurricane felt like “instant Karma” for Texans and that he hoped they would realize “the GOP doesn’t care about them,” according to screenshots posted by Campus Reform.

The original tweet was later deleted, but not before Storey defended it several times against commenters. According to Fox News, Storey also wrote, “Well the good people there need to do more to stop the evil their state pushes.” He also said Trump supporters in Florida deserved a hurricane as well.

After a strong backlash on Twitter, Storey deleted the comment and apologized. “I deeply regret a statement I posted yesterday,” he tweeted. “I never meant to wish ill will on any group. I hope all affected by Harvey recover quickly.”

“We condemn the comments and the sentiment behind them, and understand the pain this irresponsible act has caused,” the University of Tampa said in a statement, Fox News reported. “As Floridians, we are well aware of the destruction and suffering associated with tropical weather. Our thoughts and prayers are with all impacted by Hurricane Harvey.”

Twitter users were quick to condemn the ex-professor and his comments.

Hurricane Harvey has impacted hundreds of thousands in Texas and Louisiana and is believed to be responsible for 15 deaths so far, Fox News reported.
