Taylor Swift made a sizable donation to “Law & Order: SVU” actress Mariska Hargitay’s Joyful Heart foundation that helps survivors of sexual assault after winning her lawsuit in which she said a radio DJ groped her during a photo.
Swift was awarded a token $1 in the jury trial. David Mueller had sued Swift after he was fired, claiming she was trying to destroy his career.
“I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society, and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this,” Swift said after the verdict, People reported. “My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard.”
Swift said she would be donating to multiple causes but wouldn’t comment on her donations, although the organizations were free to do so.
“I am deeply grateful to Taylor Swift for her courage to speak out and her generous investment in many deserving organizations, including Joyful Heart,” CEO Maile Zambuto said, USA Today reported. “Taylor’s actions send a powerful message to survivors everywhere: You matter. What happens to you matters. And you are not alone.”
Hargitay said of the donation, “I’m honored by her dedication and commitment to these issues, and I’m deeply grateful for her support of the Joyful Heart Foundation,” USA Today reported.
Swift may not have been looking for acknowledgment but Twitter users gave her accolades for her actions anyway.
