David Finn, Nugent’s attorney, said the incident was “an honest mistake."
Nugent, who has a concealed handgun license and no criminal record, either “completely forgot or never knew the weapon was in her bag.”
Finn said he does not expect his client to be indicted by a grand jury.
Finn said Nugent faces a $2,000 fine,
USA TODAY reported.
“She is very embarrassed. She’s never been in this situation before,” Finn said. “She has expressed remorse for any inconvenience for any public safety officials.”
Through July 17, 57 guns were found in carry-on luggage by security personnel, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Ted Nugent, a board member for the National Rifle Association, has often criticized liberal groups over their attempts to block Americans' Second Amendment rights.
A police report of Thursday’s arrest is expected to be released Friday.
