A teen girl died Monday afternoon following a shark attack while surfing with her father in Western Australia.
The teen was surfing in Esperance, Western Australia, at the Kelp Beds surf break when she was attacked by the shark. She was pulled from the water unconscious after the attack, and a citizen performed CPR until the paramedics arrived about 30 minutes later, 9 News Australia reported. She was treated by paramedics before being taken to the hospital, where she later died.
The girl, who was 17, had serious injuries to her legs and was losing a lot of blood when she was pulled from the water, 9 News reported.
The type of shark was not officially identified, but a medium-sized great white was reportedly seen in the area, according to the New York Daily News.
The attack took place near the same area where a surfer lost his left arm and right hand when two sharks attacked him in October 2014.
Sky News Australia reported the teen’s mother and sisters witnessed the attack from the beach and that her mother called emergency services.
Wylie Bay Beach was closed until further notice, with police telling people to stay out of the area for the next 48 hours or more.
The Department of Fisheries plans to patrol the beach and water in the area beginning Tuesday and will also investigate the attack, Sky News reported.
Sharks are common in Australian waters, but fatal shark attacks have been rare over the past few decades.
