A sequel is set for the new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie after the reboot raked in $97.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount chief Brad Grey and producer Michael Bay have announced June 2, 2016, as the release date for the sequel.

Megan Colligan, Paramount's head of domestic marketing and distribution, said the two demographics that led the box office charge were middle-aged men seeking a dose of nostalgia and kids who are fans of the newest animated "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" television show that currently runs on Nickelodeon.

"It's odd when you have 25- to 35-year-olds and then 7- to 12-year-olds really excited about the same film," Colligan told The San Jose Mercury News. "The teen audience was actually the one that wasn't as familiar with the property, so we put a lot of focus on teens. I think we did a great job of getting them out there to see the film, which is so fun, refreshing and unique."

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is the second tent pole of the summer movie season, along with Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy" starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, which has hauled in $313.2 million after its second weekend in theaters.

"It's finally starting to feel like summer," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak, told the Mercury News. "The perception of August used to be that it was the month of the B-sides, not the hits. The movies are now defining what August can be, not the month defining what the movies should be."

The PG-13 "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett alongside CGI-versions of the four famous reptile superheroes, and was directed by Jonathan Liebesman.
