A suspect in a Tennessee church shooting that killed one and injured seven Sunday has been held without bond on charges of murder.
Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, allegedly arrived outside the Burnette Chapel Church Sunday morning wearing a mask and carrying a handgun, NBC News reported.
He allegedly waited outside the building for several minutes before making a move, according to a news release from the Metro Government of Nashville.
He allegedly opened fire when 39-year-old Melanie Crow Smith appeared in the parking lot, fatally killing her before proceeding to enter the church and fire multiple shots at the congregation, the press release said.
A church usher, Robert Caleb, attempted to confront Samson and an altercation ensued.
"During the struggle, Samson’s gun discharged, striking him in the left chest," the press release said. "The wound sent Samson to the floor. Engle, despite his head injuries, ran out to his car in the parking lot and retrieved a pistol."
Engle reportedly held Samson at gunpoint until police arrived.
Seven people were injured by Samson, who had attended services at the church in past years, according to the press release.
Among those injured was a church minister who, according to USA Today, had shouted to the congregants of mostly senior citizens to run out of the building when Samson entered.
Police have not yet established a motive for the shootings.
The church announced it would hold a prayer vigil Monday evening outside the building.
"We are beyond grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and compassion we have received from so many after the tragic event that took place yesterday," the church posted on Facebook. "We ask for your continued prayers and support during the coming days and months, especially for the family of our sweet and dear sister Melanie L. Crow, who lost her life. God's blessings to you all."
