A shooting at Tennessee State University on Tuesday morning left a 19-year-old former student in critical condition.

Larry Bates was shot in the chest in the parking lot of Boyd Hall at about 9:30 a.m., WSMV reported. Bates was in the parking lot talking to someone who was inside a car when he was shot, Metro Nashville Police Department said.

There may have been more than one person inside the vehicle, and it is still unclear what the vehicle looked like, The Tennessean reported. The car then left the area. It is believed the person or persons in the car and Bates knew each other.

Bates was not currently enrolled at TSU, but had taken classes there in spring 2017 and was a resident at Boyd Hall, WSMV reported. It was not clear why Bates, who lives in the Chicago area, was on TSU’s campus Tuesday.

Metro PD spokesman Don Aaron reported that the gunman fled the scene after the shooting, and the campus was not in immediate danger, WSMV reported. The campus is not on lockdown and classes are in session Tuesday.

Metro PD is reviewing surveillance of the area, Fox 17 reported. The suspect is not in custody and no description of the shooter is available at this time.
