Texas A&M Stadium Fall: 4-Story Plunge Kills Construction Worker

A construction worker involved with the renovation of Texas A&M University's Kyle Field Stadium in College Station, Texas, died Tuesday after falling four stories.

Angel Garcia, 25, of Lindamood Demolition, died at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Bryan shortly after the accident, which occurred about 11:30 a.m., according to the Associated Press.

Kyle Field, home of the university's football team, is undergoing a $450 million renovation to make the facility's seating the largest in the Southeastern Conference, going from 82,600 seats to 102,500 seats.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Texas A&M University System and university police are investigating the accident but did not announce any additional details about the fall.

"On behalf of Texas A&M University and the extended Aggie family I offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the construction worker who tragically passed away," University President R. Bowen Loftin said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The overhaul would give the school bragging rights, since Kyle Field Stadium would be second largest for universities across the nation, behind University of Michigan's stadium. It would also be the largest stadium in the state, topping the 100,119-seat Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, according to CollegeGridirons.com.

The cities of Bryan and College Station, along with the county, agreed to use hotel occupancy tax funds to bring $1.2 million a year to the project, KBTX-TV reported. The first phase of renovations will be completed by the start of the 2014 season, and total construction will be finished by November 2015.

Currently, Tennessee has the largest football stadium in the Southeastern Conference with a seating capacity of 102,455, the third largest in the country.

Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, seats 109,901 fans, followed by Penn State University in State College, Pa., with 106,572 seats. Ohio State University in Columbus has a 102,329 seating capacity.
